1901 Primera Bandera de la Concha

History 1890-2004

The first offical written reference of the participation of atrainera from ORIO dates from 1879 in the Regattas of la Concha de San Sebastián, when it came in third.

Its first victory came in 1901.
Different commissions of the Town Council or the Fishermen's Association took care of organising rowing and trainera races in the town.

Between 1890 and 1932, the oarsmen of Orio competed under the name of the town, ORIO. Between 1933 and 1964 they used the name Emen-Gatoxtik-ORIO.

The Club de Remo was created in June 1965.
It was named the "Club de Remo Olímpico de Orio". It was in this year that it started to engage in Olympic fixed-seat activities. (Outriggers).

In 1986, when the Club registered with the Register of Sports Associations of the Basque Autonomous Community, the Basque name “Arraunketa Elkartea" was added. Thus, nowadays the official name of the Club is: Club Remo Olímpico ORIO Arraunketa Elkartea. Abbreviated to: (C.R.O. ORIO A.E.)

The arrival of different sponsors has brought mixed names to identify the Club, such as:
CAMPIG-ORIO; ORIO-CINZANO; ORIO-CEPSA; Hondartza?-ORIO; Hondartza?-ORIO-La Gula del Norte; OTSEIN-ORIO; CANDY-ORIO; CANDY-ORIO-ISABEL.

Moreover, the Orio trainera has traditionally been called San Nikolas, a reference to the Patron Saint of the Town. In recent years the different traineras of Orio have been called, exceptionally, Kanpa and Txiki, in honour of the rower Asier Gaztañazpi and the skipper Juanmari Larrañaga respectively, who died in an accident.
