International Regattas
This regatta was first held on August 25, 1968. On that day, the eight oarsmen of the famous English crew of Oxford, who compete against the Cambridge eight every year in the world's most famous race, with the longest tradition of any race held in the world, came to Orio.
On that summer day in 1968, the Orio oarsmen achieved one of the greatest feats in its brilliant record, and not just for defeating the famous English oarsmen, but also for organising such an important event in the small Basque town.
This competiton, which started in 1968, was held every year except, 1972 and 1975, up until 1976, totalling seven editions. As of that year, the club from Orio went through a minor crisis of level and identity, and the international events stopped. After that initial era at the club, a further three international regattas were held in the waters of Orio, in 1989, 2001 and 2004.
Orio has won five of the ten events held to date. But the club's greatest merit lies in its proven capacity to organise this level of competition. In these ten events the waters of Orio have seen the likes of oarsmen from Germany, France, Switzerland, Holland, Great Britain, Belgium, Unites States, Poland and Italy , besides the usual clubs in the Spanish Championships.
